Yuranha pre-employment programs

This program is called 'Yuranha', which means to grow in Wiradjuri language.

If you haven’t worked somewhere like DCJ before, the Aboriginal Employment Strategy (AES) team has partnered with registered training organisations (RTOs) to create this program to get you upskilled and ready for a role with us.

Our partners have longstanding expertise in specialised training and education. The staff have been delivering training to Aboriginal communities for many years and are well aware of the needs and ambitions of our communities across NSW.

About the course

The training program is equivalent to a full-time course load. Over an 8 – 12 month period, you’ll join other participants for a week at a time, for up to nine ‘blocks’ altogether. The course is offered at both regional and city locations. And you can complete your full qualification at either Certificate III or IV level, depending on the course you’re enrolled in.

Your lived experience

Yuranha prepares Aboriginal people for the many roles on offer within DCJ. The various programs identify and develop the confidence, talents and skills we know are there in our community. Your lived experience counts, and it puts you in good standing for some great education and employment opportunities.

You’ll be supported

You’ll be supported by Aboriginal staff, and together, we’ll help you get up to speed on everything you’ll require to apply for ongoing roles in Corrective Services, Youth Justice or across the whole of DCJ.

You’ll need to confirm your suitability for the pre-employment programs, which will make transitioning to employment with DCJ easier.  Visit Completing the checklist to be a Yuranha participant to learn more.

Enrolling means you’re opening doors to your future career. Once you’ve completed the Yuranha program, you can progress to employment with DCJ or exit with a nationally recognised qualification.

This is vital work. We know we’ll do it so much better with you there.

Please note that at DCJ we commonly use the word "Aboriginal", recognising that Aboriginal people are the original inhabitants of NSW, the part of Australia we are responsible for. We acknowledge and respect that Torres Strait Islander people are among the First Nations of Australia and that both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are an important part of our staff and the communities we work with.
