Cognitive Impairment Diversion Program

The Cognitive Impairment Diversion Program (CIDP) ceased operation on 30 June 2020.

CIDP was established in October 2017 as a two-year pilot program at Gosford and Penrith local courts with funding from the NDIS Transition Fund. CIDP aimed to increase the diversion of people with cognitive impairment and low level offending away from the criminal justice system and into appropriate community based-services.  It also provided support to participants to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme and other services.

The pilot was able to operate beyond its original two years by implementing process improvements, and with additional short-term funding from the Department of Communities and Justice. The pilot model was not one that could be sustained or expanded to other locations. Evaluations of CIDP are available below:
