Major upgrade for Port Macquarie courthouse

7 February 2023

The NSW Government has announced a $5.1 million upgrade for Port Macquarie Courthouse, a project that will deliver a new courtroom and other new facilities for court users.

Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams welcomed the major upgrade which will expand the number of courtrooms from two to three.

“This is an exciting new upgrade for the Port Macquarie Courthouse and an important investment in our region,” Mrs Williams said.

“This courthouse has served the Port Macquarie community since 1986 and it is wonderful to see this building revitalised to ensure it remains contemporary and fit for purpose. Adding another courtroom will help manage growing demand for court services in Port Macquarie and ensure the complex meets our local community’s justice needs for many years to come.”

Mrs Williams and Attorney General Mark Speakman today unveiled the artist impressions of the $5.1 million upgrade. Mr Speakman said the upgrade will also include:

  • new interview rooms, judicial chamber, robing room and associated amenities
  • the installation of 25 kilowatt solar panels
  • a reconfiguration and update of the existing registry office storage area
  • the installation of airport style security scanning facilities at the front entrance.

“The court upgrade is being funded as part of the NSW Government’s $220 million commitment over five years to 2024-25 to support courts and infrastructure,” Mr Speakman said.

“Port Macquarie was also one of 45 courthouses across the state to benefit from a $9 million package for new and upgraded safe spaces and modern facilities to help empower domestic and sexual violence survivors and vulnerable witnesses to give their best evidence in court.

“Port Macquarie Courthouse received a new safe room and a new remote witness room, plus upgrades to the existing safe room and remote witness room.”

The courthouse upgrade is scheduled to commence in April 2023 and be completed in early 2024. Artist impressions of the Port Macquarie upgrade are available here.
