Business area: Housing Appeals Committee
Division: Strategy, Policy and Commissioning
The Housing Appeals Committee is able to use video links for HAC appeals. This allows people using hearing interpreters that are unable to access face to face hearings to participate in a more meaningful way than a telephone hearing.
The HAC hearing room has a hearing loop, we use the National Relay Service for people that have hearing impairments and Auslan interpreters are also available.
It can be challenging to participate in appeal hearings that are held over the phone for some people with disability.
Face to face hearings are not always possible for people with disability for a variety of reasons including access to transport, living remotely, limited mobility etc. Video Conferencing can help people to engage with the Committee during a hearing and feel that they have been listened to in a way that's similar to a face to face hearing.
HAC will be able to send a link to the pesons phone or computer that they can click on to access a video hearing.
The video hearing could include the National Relay Service, Auslan Interpreter as well as advocates or family members.
Measurements will include a Survey Monkey survey sent to people that have participated in video hearings to measure their satisfaction with the video hearing and ask for suggestions.
