NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner

The Anti-slavery Commissioner for New South Wales is Dr James Cockayne. His 5-year term commenced on 1 August 2022. The role was created by the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (NSW).

The Commissioner’s functions include:

  • promoting anti-slavery actions
  • identifying and supporting survivors
  • monitoring the effectiveness of anti-slavery laws and policies
  • supporting public entities to tackle modern slavery risks in operations and supply-chains 
  • providing advice and training
  • raising community awareness about modern slavery.
