About Us

What we do

The Department of Communities and Justice, Legal (DCJ Legal) can provide legal services if you have been requested by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) or the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) to attend an interview, or if you have been served with a:

  • notice to provide a statement of information;
  • notice to provide documents or other things; or
  • summons to appear and give evidence.

DCJ Legal can also provide legal representation at Royal and Special Commissions of Inquiry as directed by the Attorney General.

Background

Legal representation was previously provided by the Legal Representation Office (LRO) which was established in 1994 to provide legal advice and representation in relation to the Royal Commission into the NSW Police Service. Legal representation is now provided by the Department of Communities and Justice, Legal (DCJ Legal).

DCJ Legal provides advice and representation to witnesses appearing before ICAC and the LECC (formerly the Police Integrity Commission).

Legal representation has also been provided to witnesses at various Special Commissions, Royal Commissions and selected Coronial Inquests.

Our services

  • We provide independent legal advice and representation to witnesses in relation to their involvement with the ICAC and LECC.
  • We provide legal representation at Royal and Special Commissions of Inquiry and in other matters as directed by the Attorney General.

We acknowledge Aboriginal people as the First Nations Peoples of NSW and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and future.

Informed by lessons of the past, Department of Communities and Justice is improving how we work with Aboriginal people and communities. We listen and learn from the knowledge, strength and resilience of Stolen Generations Survivors, Aboriginal Elders and Aboriginal communities.
