Community drop-in sessions for correctional centre reuse

reuseDrop-in sessions will be held in Ivanhoe and Brewarrina next week so the community can have their say on the future of two Western NSW correctional centres.

The NSW Government is hosting the information and feedback sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday and is keen to receive input on ventures that could promote long-term jobs and contribute to the regional economy.

Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Peter Severin said the Department was committed to working with staff and communities impacted by the decision to next year retire Brewarrina and Ivanhoe correctional centres.

“We have also been working with MPs, councils and local communities so they can have their say about repurposing the Ivanhoe and Brewarrina facilities for future use. This is another step on that journey,” Mr Severin said.

We are asking individuals, community groups, service providers, government agencies and businesses to provide their input into how these two properties could be revitalised and continue to contribute to the local economy.

We are interested in understanding how they see these facilities operating in the future and what they could provide for their local communities

In September, the NSW Government announced the retirement of the correctional centres as new fit-for-purpose prison beds, focused on rehabilitation, and officer and inmate safety, become available.
