Seeking best ways to reuse correctional centres

Last published on 08 Nov 2019

The NSW Government is asking the community to have its say on the future use of two correctional centres in Western NSW to promote long-term jobs and contribute to the regional economy.

Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections Anthony Roberts said the Government was seeking ideas on the best ways to reuse the Brewarrina and Ivanhoe correctional centres, which will be retired next year.

“We are asking individuals, community groups, service providers, government agencies and businesses to provide their input into how these two properties could be revitalised and continue to contribute to the local economy,” Mr Roberts said.

“We are interested in understanding how they see these facilities operating in the future and what they could provide for their local communities.”

In September, the NSW Government announced the retirement of the correctional centres as new fit-for-purpose prison beds, focused on rehabilitation, and officer and inmate safety, become available.

Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Peter Severin said the Department was committed to working with staff and communities impacted by the decision.

“We have also been working with MPs, councils and local communities so they can have their say about repurposing the Ivanhoe and Brewarrina facilities for future use. This is another step on that journey,” Mr Severin said.
