Kempsey prison expansion officially opens

A new 440-bed medium-security section of the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre officially opened today as part of the Government’s $3.8 billion prison expansion program.

Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections Anthony Roberts presented the ceremonial keys to Governor Majid Marashian at the opening ceremony and praised the investment in the Mid North Coast region.

During construction more than 1,350 people were employed, most of whom came from the Kempsey area,” Mr Roberts said.

“This new state-of-the-art facility has also created about 120 new ongoing jobs based in Aldavilla, which will have a much needed flow-on effect into the local economy.”

Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Peter Severin said the new industries complex and programs spaces are dedicated to inmate rehabilitation and training as well as environmental responsibility

“The new Corrective Services Industries building includes timber manufacturing, kitchen, yard maintenance and a recycling plant to manage waste generated by up to 1,000 inmates,” Mr Severin said.

“These industries will help provide inmates with skills they can use to find a job once released, and the new programs spaces will help to break the cycle of crime by supporting inmates to address the nature of their offending.”

The project includes the installation of an 11-kilometre sewer line alongside the existing sewer system, which will be granted to Kempsey Shire Council once the new line is completed.
