Goulburn Correctional Complex staff have intercepted drugs, tobacco and prescription pills yesterday (Saturday, 7 August) after disrupting a contraband drop that led to the arrest of five people.

Corrective Services Acting Commissioner Kevin Corcoran PSM said staff vigilance was key to recovering the drugs and capturing those involved.

“Our officers detected suspicious activity near the external perimeter fence and responded immediately,” Mr Corcoran said.

“They disrupted the drop, intercepted two packages and ultimately apprehended those responsible.

“It sends a clear message to anyone who thinks they will get away with these contraband drops; we are watching and you will be caught.”

Security Operations Group officers responded to the perimeter fence about 10.50am after an officer in the tower detected a man trying to throw packages into a prison yard.

Responding officers confronted the man, who ran to a car and fled. NSW Police were notified.

SOG officers recovered two packages of contraband inside the external fence that contained buprenorphine, green vegetable matter, tobacco and prescription drugs.

About 1.05pm an officer in the tower observed the man had returned.

Officers confronted the man again and he fled into a nearby paddock, where he became entangled in blackberry bushes and was subsequently apprehended until NSW Police arrived.

Four other people were arrested by NSW Police in a car nearby.

Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police are investigating.
