Senior barrister joins Supreme Court bench

Highly experienced barrister Michael Meek SC has been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of NSW.

Attorney General Mark Speakman said Mr Meek’s impressive legal career spans 36 years, including 30 years at the Bar and almost 13 years as Senior Counsel.

“Mr Meek is recognised as a leader in estates, trusts, charitable trusts and protective law, appearing regularly in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of NSW,” Mr Speakman said.

“He has also been involved in commercial litigation and acted in significant common law cases, including the Thredbo landslide commercial claims litigation.

“In addition to maintaining his leading practice, Mr Meek has been a keen supporter of legal education during his career. His contributions to the legal profession have included his involvement with the NSW Bar Practice Course in Equity, the College of Law and the Law Faculty of the University of Technology Sydney. He has prepared and delivered papers covering many topics at CLE succession law seminars.

“Mr Meek was also a contributing author of the staple legal text Ritchie’s Uniform Civil Procedure for 15 years.

“The justice system is fortunate to be able to call upon a lawyer of Mr Meek’s calibre, experience and standing to serve on the bench of the Supreme Court.”

Mr Meek will be sworn in on Thursday, 5 May 2022.

Biography:

Mr Meek holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney and was admitted as a solicitor in 1986. He began practising as a barrister in 1992 and was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2009.

He has been a member of the international Society of Trusts and Estates Practitioners (STEP) since 2014 and is a Fellow of the Commercial Law Association of Australia.
