Ground-breaking docuseries unlocks life in NSW prisons

3 Feb 2022

Corrective Services NSW hits television screens nation-wide tonight in Channel 9’s landmark docuseries Australia Behind Bars, offering an unprecedented look at life in the state’s prisons.

Commissioner Kevin Corcoran PSM said the eight-part series will take viewers behind the high walls of three maximum security prisons; Wellington, Dillwynia and Silverwater.

“This unprecedented level of access shows the public how critical our corrections staff are in providing offenders with programs, education, training and support while keeping our prisons and communities safe,” Mr Corcoran said.

“We won’t shy away from harsh realities of prison life because it’s important that the public recognises our resilience, commitment and dedication to the rehabilitation of offenders in our role as frontline workers.”

Television presenter Melissa Doyle leads the Australian television first, described by Nine as having ‘unforgettable characters, intimate access to the inner workings of the prison system, and highly charged emotional moments of unfiltered humanity’.

Deputy Commissioner Luke Grant said the series features both staff and inmates to provide the public a more comprehensive understanding of prison life.

“I hope this series allows people to better appreciate the skills, qualities of character and passion corrections staff need to do such an important job safely and effectively,” Mr Grant said.

“Teamwork is at the core of CSNSW and our involvement in this series was no exception; we’re thankful to the many staff for their patience, support and participation.”

Produced by ITV Studios Australia for the 9Network, the series premieres Thursday, 3 February at 9pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

“I think it’s about time people hear about it,” one officer said in the series preview.

“We want them [inmates] to come out better than they came in,” another said.

The docuseries will also be on the streaming service, Nine Now.
