Corrections staff recognised Australia-wide

21 Jan 2022

The 11,000 staff working in the state’s 36 prisons and 79 Community Corrections offices will be recognised today for their work in rehabilitating offenders and keeping the community safe.

Minister for Corrections Geoff Lee said National Corrections Day was an opportunity to show the community what a significant contribution corrections staff make to the lives of others.

“Corrective Services NSW staff are dedicated to reducing reoffending and ensuring our correctional facilities are operated safely and effectively,” Mr Lee said.

“National Corrections Day is an opportunity to reflect on the exceptional but often thankless work our staff perform on the frontlines every day – often under challenging or dangerous circumstances.

“I know it’s not an easy job, but I want to thank our Corrections staff on behalf of the community for their valuable work because it keeps all of us safe and is helping to change lives for the better.”

CSNSW Commissioner Kevin Corcoran PSM said it was important to recognise how committed staff are to being positive forces of change within their own communities.

“Our staff are world-class and deserve the public recognition for their incredible work,” Mr Corcoran said.

“They serve the community every day by operating our correctional facilities, running behaviour-change programs, linking offenders with support services and providing opportunities for education and training.

“Corrective Services NSW staff also go above and beyond in other ways too, supporting each other through hardship, actively fundraising in the workplace, volunteering in the community or contributing to not-for-profits via community service work programs.”

The 2022 National Corrections Day theme is Giving back, highlighting the ways CSNSW staff go beyond the call of duty to protect the community, fundraise for charities, volunteer and contribute to vital community projects and partnerships.

CSNSW includes about 6,300 custodial officers, 1,800 Community Corrections staff, 800 industries workers, 900 psychologists and programs officers, 1,100 Security and Intelligence staff and 200 administrative support staff.
