Landmark development for more affordable housing in Casino

6 May 2022

A newly-built landmark $2 million affordable housing development in Casino is providing stable accommodation to tenants in need.

Minister for Families and Communities and Disability Services Natasha Maclaren-Jones celebrated the official opening of the eight-unit development in Casino today, which will provide local families with a better future.

“Affordable accommodation not only provides stability, it can help improve prospects of further education, training or employment for a brighter future,” Mrs Maclaren-Jones said.

“This development has the potential to open the door to workforce participation, improved financial security and better health and welfare for tenants.”

Member for Clarence Chris Gulaptis said this development will transform the lives of locals looking for affordable accommodation in the area.

“The units will be life changing. They are located close to Casino’s CBD and have been built for the future with sustainable features, such as solar panels to keep energy costs down,” Mr Gulaptis said.

The development is delivered in partnership with non-government organisation Momentum Collective.

The dwelling includes six two-bedroom units and two one-bedroom units, including a unit that has been designed with accessibility standards.

Momentum Collective CEO Dr Tracey Mackie said finding solutions for regional housing takes a whole of community approach.

“We welcome the support. Momentum is pleased to offer these safe and stable affordable homes for local people who may have been experiencing rental stress or living in less-than-ideal situations. We believe strongly that access to good quality, affordable housing is fundamental to people’s wellbeing,” Dr Mackie said.

Eligible tenants have moved into the new properties, with the last tenant moving in at the end of this week.
