Major milestone for NDIS in NSW

More than 150,000 people are benefiting from services and support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) three years on from its full roll-out in NSW.

Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Alister Henskens said the milestone comes as the community is being encouraged to have its say on proposed changes to the NDIS.

“From the inception of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), NSW has led the way, both in the world-leading rollout and advocating for changes to make it better,” Mr Henskens said.

“The proposed changes to the NDIS Act seek to improve the Scheme for both participants and providers, including through the implementation of the Participant Service Guarantee, which NSW has advocated strongly for.

“David Tune’s Review of the NDIS Act provided the blueprint for changes that would deliver on the intentions of a co-designed NDIS. This proposed Bill seeks to implement some of those changes.

“It is important that the voices of people with disability, their families and carers are at the forefront of changes to the NDIS and this consultation period provides people with the opportunity to have their say.”

The full-scheme NDIS was rolled out in NSW in 2018 and of the 150,000 people now accessing the Scheme, more than 81,000 of them are receiving services and supports for the first time in their lives.
