Communities and Justice

Inclusive Design Workshop

Directorate: Workforce Strategy, Inclusion and Systems, People

Division: Corporate Services

Project summary

Develop an Inclusive Design workshop to build organisational capability in best practice consultation and proactive accessibility assessment.

Focus Area:

  • Creating liveable communities
  • Supporting access to meaningful employment.
  • Improving access to mainstream services through better systems and processes.

Project objective

Pilot inclusive design workshops with Band 1 leads for Corporate Services areas to build knowledge/capability in inclusive design of new initiatives. More skill in this area will avoid expensive retro-fits of accessibility, or exclusive practices that then need rectification. If pilot is successful, will seek to expand to other Divisions and explore building a 'how to' toolkit in 22/23.

The workshops have been developed in conjunction with the Australian Network on Disability, who are co-facilitating with People team and the Disability Employee Network (DEN) Chair. The workshops have been fully funded through the use of DCJ’s AND membership ‘hours’ to date.

Why is this important?

The capacity to proactively assess accessibility and engage early to determine all user requirements with potential vendors/professional services providers will help to ensure that:

Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) is not spending money on expensive retro-fits where these are avoidable (estimated by DCS at around $8mn/annum across government in 2019/20) and

that all employee needs are being proactively considered when new initiatives are undertaken, so they are able to perform their roles effectively.
