Pre-employment Checks

As part of the program, depending on which program you choose, you will be required to complete pre-employment checks and criminal records checks as part of the program. Pre-employment checks are a critical part of our recruitment process and can include reference checks, working with children checks, criminal history checks, medical assessments, and various other checks to ensure your suitability for the role.

Proof of Aboriginality

YAE&TP is intended to address social, health and educational issues that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in NSW face as the result of past removal policies, high incarceration rates, inadequate educational, employment and health services. Please do not take offence as requesting proof of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage from you helps us to make sure that this intention is honoured.

Please note: DCJ cannot comment on, prove or provide confirmation of anyone’s Aboriginal heritage.

Your Aboriginal heritage is something that is personal to you.

However, you may be asked to provide proof or confirmation of Aboriginal heritage when applying for Aboriginal specific services or programs such as:

  • Centrelink (Indigenous-specific)
  • Employment (Aboriginal identified positions)
  • School or TAFE programs for Aboriginal students

Government agencies and community organisations usually accept three ‘working criteria’ as confirmation of Aboriginal heritage. These are:

  • being of Aboriginal descent
  • identifying as an Aboriginal person
  • being accepted as such by the community in which you live, or formerly lived

All of these things must apply.

We understand that these checks might deter you, but please know that you can have a yarn with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees in the Aboriginal Employment Strategy Team if you have any questions or concerns about the types of checks needed. We are here to give you the right information so please contact the Aboriginal Employment Team at AES@justice.nsw.gov.au

We acknowledge Aboriginal people as the First Nations Peoples of NSW and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and future.

Informed by lessons of the past, Department of Communities and Justice is improving how we work with Aboriginal people and communities. We listen and learn from the knowledge, strength and resilience of Stolen Generations Survivors, Aboriginal Elders and Aboriginal communities.

You can access our apology to the Stolen Generations.
